Writing Avoiding Overused and Tired Words
When writing an essay, a term paper, or a report, always try to use words that convey your meaning both vividly and accurately. Very often, students fall into the trap of relying on so-called overused or tired words, instead of adding in some variety. Can you just imagine your poor teacher at her desk reading, The book was interesting, a hundred times or more? That cant be good for creating a friendly grading environment. How to Write Well Skillful writing is not easy; it is a tricky endeavor that involves a fine balance between extremes. You shouldnt have too much fuss or too much dry fact in a term paper, because either can be tiresome to read. One way to develop more interesting writing is to avoid tired or overused words. Youll find thatà substituting excessively used verbs with moreà interesting onesà can bring a boring paper to life. Use What You Know You may be surprised at the extent of your own vocabulary, and the fact that you dont use it for your own benefit. You probably know the meanings of many words, butà dont employ them in your speech or writing. Word usage is a good way to insert your personality, and some life, into your writing. Have you ever met someone new and noticed the difference in their use of words, phrases, and mannerisms? Well, your teacher can see that through your writing. Rather than adding long, outlandishà words to make yourself sound smart, use words you know. Find new words you like and that suit your writing style. Anytime you read, think about the words, highlight ones you donââ¬â¢t know, and look them up. This is a great way to beef up your vocabulary and become more conscious of what words you use and how you use them. Practice Read over the following sentence: The book was very interesting. Have you usedà that sentence in a book report? If so, you may want to explore other ways to convey the same message. For example: The book covered fascinating information. This work, which was actually one of Mark Twains first endeavors, was captivating. Never forget that your teacher reads many, many papers.à Alwaysà strive to make your paper special and not boring. Its a good idea to make your own paper stand out from the others with effective word use. To exercise your vocabulary powers, read over the following sentences and try to think of alternate words for each tired word that appears in italics. The Colocasia is aà bigà plant withà lots ofà leaves. The author usedà funnyà expressions. The book was supported byà manyà sources. Tired, Overused, and Boring Words Some words are specific enough, but they are so overused they are just plain boring. While it would be awkward to avoid these words all the time, you should take care to substitute more interesting words whenever appropriate. Some tired and overused words: amazing awesome awfully bad beautiful big fine good great happy interesting look nice quite really said so very well Why not try using some of these instead: absorbing avid bold candid compelling distinguished dubious empowering intuitive empowering intuitive irrelevant motivating novel predictable questionable Whileà writing a paper, you might find yourself occasionally using the same words over and over. Especially when you are writing about a specific topic, it can be difficult to find a variety of words to express the same ideas. If you have trouble, donââ¬â¢t be afraid to utilize a thesaurus. It can be a great way to expand your vocabulary.

Deontological ethics or deontology is the normative ethical position that judges the morality of an action based on the actions adherence to a rule or rules.[1] It is sometimes described as duty or obligation or rule-based ethics, because rules bind you to your duty. Deontological ethics has at least three important features. First, duty should be done for dutyââ¬â¢s sake. The rightness or wrongness of an act or rule is, at least in part, a matter of the intrinsic moral features of that kind of act or rule. For example, acts of lying, promise breaking, or murder are intrinsically wrong and we have a duty not to do these things. This does not mean that consequences of acts are not relevant for assessing those acts. For example, a doctor may have a duty to benefit a patient, and he or she may need to know what medical consequences would result from various treatments in order to determine what would and would not benefit the patient. But consequences are not what make the act right, as is the case with utilitarianism. Breast Cancer Invasive And Non Invasive - 2609 Words
Task 2 Breast Cancer Invasive/Non-invasive Most breast cancers are diagnosed when a tumour has grown from within a duct or lobule into the surrounding breast tissue. Some people are diagnosed when the cancerous cells are still within a duct or lobule. These are called carcinoma in situ, as no cancer cells have grown out from their original site. By looking at a sample of breast cancer tissue under a microscope the cancer can be graded: â⬠¢Grade 1 - cancer cells are slow-growing and less aggressive. â⬠¢Grade 2 â⬠¢Grade 3 - cancer cells are fast-growing and more aggressive. Surgery The types of operation which may be considered are: â⬠¢Breast-conserving surgery - a lumpectomy is one type of operation where just the tumour and some surrounding breast tissue are removed. This aims to kill any cancer cells which may have been left in the breast tissue. It is common to have radiotherapy following this operation. â⬠¢Removal of the affected breast (mastectomy) - this may be necessary if there is a large tumour or a tumour in the middle of the breast. â⬠¢A sentinel lymph node biopsy - this is a way of assessing if the main lymph nodes draining the breast contain cancer. The Indians were the main focus of the history of Essay Example For Students
The Indians were the main focus of the history of Essay New France, andinfluenced the Europeans in the period before 1663. The Indians, beingnumerous compared with the Europeans, came into frequent contact with them. The Indians and Europeans traded items with one another, which led tovarious events and actions that contributed greatly to the history of NewFrance. The Europeans who arrived after the Indians had already settledwere exposed to the native peoples way of life, from which techniques forsurvival were acquired. Later, the Europeans depended on the Indians, someof whom acted as middlemen and who had items which were valuable to them. Various Indian personalities were also observed and admired by Europeansparticularly the Jesuits. The Native Indians were among the first people to enter North America. They entered America through the passage of the Bering Strait, a locationwhich is the midpoint of Alaska and Siberia. As time passed, they settledon various pieces of land and hunted, fished and grew crops. Alfred Baileymentions that, It had been suggested that Siouans, the Iroquoians andAlgonquians were among the first to enter America.1 Before the Europeansarrived, there were many native tribes that were already settled. By thetime Europeans arrived in North America, they found natives occupying largeamounts of land.2 The Indians helped start the history of New France. Since the natives arrived early in North America, their populationstarted to increase quite rapidly. With the combination of migration aswell as the birth rate, the Indians inflated their population to a largesize. In 1663, there were only still 3000 Europeans living in New France,no more people than constituted a small Iroquoian tribe.3 The Indianswere in the majority before 1663. Surrounding the area of New France there were two main native groupswho spoke different languages. These groups were the Algonquian and theIroquoian. The Algonquians were primarily involved in trading and fishing. Thesepeople remained in groups called bands, which included relatives such asparents, children, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Algonquiansprimarily hunted, and so would develop groups to hunt in different areas. They travelled around frequently and would take everything they neededwhile on their hunting journey. In the winter, they used snowshoes; in theSummer, they used the canoe. The Algonquians were always moving from onelocation to another; because of their hunting they never stayed in onelocation for a long period of time. The Iroquoians were mainly occupied with agriculture. This groupestablished themselves near land which could be farmed upon. They remainedin this area until the land was exhausted and nothing more could becultivated upon it. After the land was worthless it was abandoned andanother piece of land was selected upon which to plant at another location. Their villages were known as Longhouses. These Longhouses were quite largeand supported more than five families in them. The men were mainly thepeople who constructed the Longhouse. While the men were busy during thesummer, hunting, trading, or engaging in war, the women would care for thecrops. The Iroquoians helped contribute to agriculture by being one of thefirst to grow crops. While trading with the Europeans, the Indians were faced with manyinstances that were devastating and other cases which helped them profit. Trade in New France was so prominent that France decided to create amonopoly to bring the trade under control. Two provisions had to be met:Firstly, the private fur trading company had topromote colonization. Secondly, it had to send Roman Catholic missionaries to Christianize the Indians.4 On the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Tadoussac, became the chief trading centre forthe Europeans. The trade route surrounding Tadoussac contained connectionsfrom Hudson Bay to New England. Some negative aspects of the fur tradewere that:The Fur Trade at first enriched traditional Indian life, but later increasing competition for pelts generated conflicts that led to the dispersal of many Indian groups. Indian wars grew out of long standing rivalries or developed as a result of Indian disputes over furs.5 An outcome of trading with the Europeans that devastated the Indians, was the epidemics which the Europeans presented. These epidemics destroyeda large percentage of the Indian population, which they did n ot deserve andwhich were calamitous to the population. .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea , .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea .postImageUrl , .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea , .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea:hover , .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea:visited , .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea:active { border:0!important; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea:active , .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5a8af058bf64a4a8a97a064bdac355ea:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Short Story Summaries EssayCertain groups, such as the Hurons, abandoned agriculture and focusedon trading. Media and Communications New Media Developments
Question: Discuss about theMedia and Communicationsfor New Media Developments. Answer: Introduction Communication is defined as a medium for the purpose of transferring information from one entity to another entity. The process of transferring the information is being carried out in the process of developing the interactions and also the sharing of the knowledge is being enhanced by the process of developing the new contexts of the ideas. The sharing of the information is being appropriately constructed by the help of the communication process that symbolizes the interactions between the two or more people (Carey, 2009). The attempt that is undertaken in this essay clearly describes the two alternative models of James W. Carey for creating focus on the new media developments. The two alternatives consist of the various concepts of the communication process which are categorized into transmission and rituals. Thus, it enabled the learner to have the appropriate view of the communication processes used for distinguishing the new media with the help of the two models. The communicatio n theories and models are used by the people and business organizations to convey their own opinions and views. Carey has focused on two communication theories which are transmission view communication theory and ritual view communication theory. Main Context Relevance of the Two Conceptions of Communication The two model of the James W. Carey shows the transmission and the ritual views by considering the conception of the communication. Therefore, the two conceptions can be easily focused with the provision of the explanation of the two conceptual models which are used for describing the new media story (Park, 2008). The theories of communication are appropriately explained by Carey and prefers ritual view communication theory because from his point of view, transmission communication theory is over used in the society nowadays. The Transmission View The transmission views are defined as the most common form of the culture. This culture can be easily described with undertaking all the cultures and dominates that had been developed for the purpose of describing dominates of the contemporary dictionary entries. The definition can be defined as the imparting, sending and the transmitting of information for the purpose of sharing knowledge. The enhancement of the metaphor or the geographic transportation is being described in the form of transmitting the information to the others. The enhancement of the movements can be easily explained with the movement of the information to the others. It also provides the information which is essentially identical for the development of the ideas for the communication process and also it enables the enhancement of the process within the people (Pauly, 2007). The enhancement of the work process can be essentially focused by identifying the communication processes and also the description of the com munication can be appropriately made by the help of the transmission of the signals or the messages. The views of the communication can be appropriately increased by enabling the desire for the increment of the speed and the effects of the messages. The development of the news story can be appropriately made in an easy with the help of transmitting the messages through the help of the signals. The Ritual View The ritual view clearly explains the transmission of the messages in space which are needed to be maintained for the society with the time. The communication process is seemed to be related to the religious or the ritual views in which the sacred ceremony is being described with the provision of the messages and also it attracts the fellowships and the commonality. The indebtedness of this is clearly represented from the communication made to the religion from the variation of the time and thereby the significant role is being explained in the form of the society (Pooley, Carey, 2016). For the purpose of comparing the effects, the analysis of this usage is being enlightened in the form of the highest manifestation and the maintenance of the credibility is being depicted. The new enlighting becomes the medium for the purpose of sharing this information and also highlights the views that seems to be requisite for the producing the dramatic focus. Moreover, the news writing reading bec omes the important factor for the enhancement of the views enabled with depicting the dramatic views and also the reader gains the pure information regarding the impact created on the society with the ritual view of the communication process (Stacks, Salwen, 2009). Therefore, the structure seems to be illustrating the appropriate views of the relevance nature which is being provided while comparing the two forms of the information. Therefore, the developments of the news in the form of communication can be easily explained by the help of these two conceptual models of James W. Carey. Analysis of the Theories The two communication model transmission and ritual play a significant role in the enhancement of the media platform. For example, a news story from a newspaper about the death of a five-year-old girl due to negligence shows the transmission and ritual communication theories. The transmission communication theory is the movement of information and has the function to transfer information within a society (Golan, Johnson Wanta, 2010). On the other hand, ritual view theory determines communication as culture sharing to provide commonality and fellowship. The ritual views theory states that the news story was not an appropriate or real information but a picture of contending forces in the society. The invisible girl is depictive in an attractive way that can evoke sympathy for the reader and compared with the darker images of her parents. The image represented the contending forces which is emphasized further by evil an adjective. The following depiction creates an effect of being the observer at the play and developing a story that creates a feeling among the readers (McLuhan McLuhan, 2011). The story was also depicted with the use of colour letters such as red which shows the sign of danger, but it also shows power and strength which contrasts the young girl's innocence. The photo given in the newspaper can also be analysed from the transmission communication theory point of view that it is disseminating knowledge and news as the picture is the distribution of factual and visual information. Bullet points are also used that can be viewed as both ritual and transmission communication form. However, the newspaper also provides significant information to the readers in an easy and simple. The story can be viewed from the transmission communication theory point of view. Nouns have also been used from the set of professions such as social workers, police, doc and teachers which depict the inefficiency professional theme showing the contending forces between the professionals and boy and also between the professionals and reader. Thus, it can be concluded that the ritual communication theory and transmission communication theory of James Carrey can be applied to the news story which portrays the use of these theories by the media organizations. The media organizations have used the communication theories to attract large number of audiences. (Samovar, Porter MacDaniel, 2009). The factual information, layout, text and words use the ritualistic communication form to evoke the s ympathy of the readers towards the young girl and also influencing the opinions of the readers. Both the theories are interlinked with each other and can be used in the media world. However, the media do not use the social interactions under the ritual view communication theory such as discussion shows of television with friends but are the instead forms of the social integration. Both the theories show the communication and flow of information within the society. Communication is considered as the most significant tool which is used by the organizations to convey their messages efficiently and appropriately to their audiences (Severin Tankard, 2014). Carey has given his opinion on the two communication theories. He thinks ritual view communication theory is much better than transmission view communication theory. He thinks that the transmission view communication theory can no longer go with the social change or technology and would also lose all its control in long run. For an example, the government may face difficulties to control the file sharing from one place to place which refers to the transmission model. Thus, the social consequences of the damages would be on the intellectual property. It does not mean that the transmission model was neglected by Carey but he just sees more benefit in the ritual view communication theory as there is a transmission communication flux around us. The transmission communication can hold and control everything and it has the hypodermic effect on us. The concept implies that whatever the media organizations depicts through the transmission communication has a powerful and direct effect on the audiences. For an example, the commercial advertisements are made to influence and control the beliefs and thoughts of the audiences towards the product and services in a positive way. Thus, the audiences are influenced with the communication process and may divert them to purchase the products. However, the ritual view communication theory helps to connect with a certain role of group. Thus, different communication theories and models helps to communicate effectively relying on the situation (Miller, 2007). Conclusion Carey has explained communication process as a complex process that maintains, builds and alters the culture of the world. The communication theories are appropriately explained by Carey which shows how media organizations use these theories. The theories are used to influence the views and perception of the readers. The communication model and theories has helped many people or group to convey their own opinions to others. The follow of communication is very much important for the development of an organization. Carey has explained two types of communication theories that are used by the media organizations. References Carey, J. (2009).Communication as culture. New York: Routledge.
