Today I want to talk about organic foods and whether it is really the path to better health and a better environment, or if it is hype from corporate marketing as a way to get consumers to spend more of their hard earned dollars with no clear benefit. Before I started my research, I was certain the answer was yes, organics must be better because it costs more and says ?healthier right on the label! During my research however, I discovered things are not as clear as what I first thought. Now Im certainly not going to tell you that organic food is unhealthy, but if you believe all the marketing, eating organic foods should make us healthier and smarter than our non-organic eating neighbors. Buying organic is marketed that it will also stop the use of unhealthy chemicals and improve the environment (). The research studies show that those comments are all a stretch of the facts, so now lets talk about some of the facts as well as the myths. The research is ongoing, but the sales figures are clear. The Organic Trade Association reported that, Organic sales hit a new record in 2017 of $49.4 billion, up 6.4% from the previous year. With more people in America looking for the quick heath fix, sales growth of organic foods is outpacing growth in non-organic categories by a factor of 6. A March Consumer Report study, as well as the USDA, report that on average, organic food is 47% more expensive to purchase than conventional food (). However, at the same time the National Academy of Sciences report indicates organic foods only cost 5-7% more (ZME Science). While these facts dont indicate whether organic food is good or bad, it does show that there are a lot of profits for big companies to be made by promoting organic foods (). Beyond corporate profits, what else is driving this ?organic craze? There were initial thoughts that organic food was better in terms of nutritional value, but there are no consensus reports that have proven that to be true. In fact, Dr. Smith-Spangler, one of twelve researchers at Stanford University, conducted a study, where they examined almost two hundred and fifty studies on organic food that were conducted during a fifteen year time span (Smith-Spangler). Their findings were stunning, Organic foods are not any more nutritious than their conventional food counterparts (Smith-Spangler). This was a huge finding and raised a lot of question, but was not the only study to have these findings regarding nutrients. A related finding from this same study, however, which does have merit for organic foods, is the potential impact of pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, and bacteria (). Most people are not buying organic for what they contain, but because of the ingredients they do not contain. Dr. Smith-Spangler also concluded, for pesticides residues,[we] found a 30 percent lower rate of detectable contamination in organically-grown produce. Two of [our] studies found that children who ate conventional produce had higher levels of pesticide residues in their urine, and the levels fell when the children switched to organic foods. A factor that often confuses the debate on whether there are any benefits to eating organic food is that consumers who regularly buy or consume organic food often have healthier lifestyles and dietary patterns. Those individuals have a higher consumption of fruit, vegetables and whole grain products. And they have a lower consumption of meat, compared to other consumers. (). The overall dietary patterns are also associated with various health benefits, as opposed to any specific benefit from the organic food. Another area often discussed and more often misunderstood is the use of pesticides on crops and their impact on the environment. While many think that pesticides are only associated with non-organic foods, a food product labeled as organic often has organic pesticides used on them. (). In fact, a 2010 study by Environmental Sciences Professor Rebecca Hallett of the University of Guelph in the UK, found that organic pesticides can actually have a worse environmental impact than conventional ones. In this study they determined that the organic pesticides on soybean crops required much higher and repeated concentrations to be effective. Those organic pesticides proved to be less effective on crops, and they can kill ladybugs and flower bugs, which are important factors of the environment. These insects actually help the crop grow and become ready for harvest (). Further, supporting the UKs study is biologist Christie Wilcox. He explained in the 2012 Scientific American article that, Organic pesticides pose the same health risks as non-organic ones. ADDD INTRO TO PERSON HERE, And while natural pesticides certainly sound healthier, it again boils down to how much of a specific substance youre ingesting. A derivative of copper, for instance, is used as a fungicide in organic farming. If ingested at inappropriate levels, it can be toxic (Winter). As this is stated in his study, you do not need to worry because as consumers we do not consume an appropriate amount of these toxic substances, in organic and non-organic foods. I know this is a lot of information to digest (no pun intended). But what does this all mean to us as consumers? Well in short, if you dont mind spending some extra money, dont mind going to the store more often, and tend to be extra cautious when it comes to your health, then there is very little downside in choosing to purchase organic. On the other hand, given there are no long term consensus studies on the health benefits of organic foods, cost are much higher, and the impact on the environment is mixed, the educated consumer will make the best choice on how to prioritize what they buy and why they buy it. For me, the inconclusive benefits mean that the cost difference will help determine the choice I make on the produce isles.

When writing an essay, a term paper, or a report, always try to use words that convey your meaning both vividly and accurately. Very often, students fall into the trap of relying on so-called overused or tired words, instead of adding in some variety. How to Write Well Skillful writing is not easy; it is a tricky endeavor that involves a fine balance between extremes. You probably know the meanings of many words, but  dont employ them in your speech or writing. Word usage is a good way to insert your personality, and some life, into your writing. Various Indian personalities were also observed and admired by Europeansparticularly the Jesuits. The Native Indians were among the first people to enter North America. They entered America through the passage of the Bering Strait, a locationwhich is the midpoint of Alaska and Siberia. As time passed, they settledon various pieces of land and hunted, fished and grew crops. Alfred Baileymentions that, It had been suggested that Siouans, the Iroquoians andAlgonquians were among the first to enter America.1 Before the Europeansarrived, there were many native tribes that were already settled. The Algonquians were primarily involved in trading and fishing. Thesepeople remained in groups called bands, which included relatives such asparents, children, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Algonquiansprimarily hunted, and so would develop groups to hunt in different areas. They travelled around frequently and would take everything they neededwhile on their hunting journey. In the winter, they used snowshoes; in theSummer, they used the canoe. The Algonquians were always moving from onelocation to another; because of their hunting they never stayed in onelocation for a long period of time. The Iroquoians were mainly occupied with agriculture. This groupestablished themselves near land which could be farmed upon. They remainedin this area until the land was exhausted and nothing more could becultivated upon it. After the land was worthless it was abandoned andanother piece of land was selected upon which to plant at another location. Their villages were known as Longhouses. These Longhouses were quite largeand supported more than five families in them. The men were mainly thepeople who constructed the Longhouse. While the men were busy during thesummer, hunting, trading, or engaging in war, the women would care for thecrops. The Iroquoians helped contribute to agriculture by being one of thefirst to grow crops. While trading with the Europeans, the Indians were faced with manyinstances that were devastating and other cases which helped them profit. Trade in New France was so prominent that France decided to create amonopoly to bring the trade under control. Two provisions had to be met:Firstly, the private fur trading company had topromote colonization. Secondly, it had to send Roman Catholic missionaries to Christianize the Indians.4 On the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Tadoussac, became the chief trading centre forthe Europeans. The trade route surrounding Tadoussac contained connectionsfrom Hudson Bay to New England. Some negative aspects of the fur tradewere that:The Fur Trade at first enriched traditional Indian life, but later increasing competition for pelts generated conflicts that led to the dispersal of many Indian groups. I don’t think I’ve ever met a writer who could honestly answer â€Å"no† to that question! Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, checking the news headlines, browsing a few webcomics, answering emails, ordering that book from Amazon you’d forgotten about there are so many distractions just a click away. The good news is, there’s plenty you can do to help yourself to focus as you write. I’ve split my suggestions into three different categories, so you can tackle whichever area you feel is holding you back the most (or whichever is easiest for you to change right now). They are: How to make your writing environment work for you What to do before you write What to do while you’re writing I’ve also included a bonus tip on something you can do after you write, to help you gradually focus better over time. How to Make Your Writing Environment Work For You #1: Get Away from Home If you normally write at home, try writing in a local coffee shop (or library, etc) instead. This cuts out a ton of potential distractions and a change of scene can make it much easier to be creative. Some of my best, most focused, writing happens when I get away for an afternoon, evening and morning at a local hotel. There’s no laundry pile, no dishes, no kids, no TV, and the wifi there doesn’t work on my ailing laptop. I can write for hours! Even if you can’t get away for very long, just an hour in a coffee shop might be enough to help you get past a creative block that you’ve been struggling with. #2: Get Rid of Intrusive Noise When I’m in the writing zone, I tune out pretty much everything (including my long-suffering husband). But getting into that zone in the first place can be tricky if there’s a lot of distracting noise going on. In our house, â€Å"noise† is normally the kids playing / fighting / singing at the top of their lungs. Maybe that sounds all too familiar to you – or maybe the noise you’re trying to block out is construction work going on nearby, or your roommate watching yet another repeat of Friends. Whatever the noise, a pair of headphones will help (I like in-ear ones, because they’re cheap and act a bit like earplugs to muffle external noise). It’s entirely up to you what you listen to: some writers like to focus with ambient sound from a site like Noisli.com; others like movie soundtracks; still others pick a particular artist, album or even song that fits with the mood of their work-in-progress. Do whatever works for you. #3: Sit at a Desk or Table If you normally write while sitting on the sofa, or even while lying in bed, try sitting at a table or desk instead – even if that means clearing some space or rearranging a room. You might find it makes a huge difference to your concentration levels. As well as feeling more like a â€Å"work† space, a seat at a table or desk is likely to be better for your posture than hunching over with your laptop on your lap, or lying in bed with your laptop propped up on your knees. (If you do decide to stick with your sofa or bed, though, you might want to   look into something like a laptop bed tray to make it easier to write there.) What To Do Before You Write #4: Make a Plan Whatever you’re about to write, you need a plan. That might be a few words scribbled on a sticky note, or it might be a detailed document outlining your whole book. But whatever your plan looks like, it’s a vital tool for keeping you on track and focused. If you begin writing without a plan, it’s all too easy to lose focus. You don’t know where you’re going next – and as soon as you come to the natural end of one train of thought, you’ll probably find yourself getting distracted by something that has nothing to do with your writing at all. #5: Set a Goal for Your Writing Session What do you want to achieve during your writing session? If you’re writing, say, a blog post, you might simply want to work through your plan – but if you’re working on part of a longer project, you may need to come up with a specific goal. For instance, if you’re writing a novel, your goal might be â€Å"write the first 1,000 words of chapter 10† or â€Å"write the scene with Jo confronting Dwayne†. If you find that setting goals can be daunting or off-putting rather than helpful, you might want to set a â€Å"minimum† goal and a â€Å"stretch† goal – that might be â€Å"write 200 words† as the minimum and â€Å"write 1,000 words† as your stretch goal. Even if you only achieve the minimum, you can still give yourself a pat on the back. #6: Decide How Long You’ll Focus For You don’t necessarily need to work with 100% focus for the whole of your writing session. You might decide to focus for 25 minutes, then take a 5 minute break. (Those particular time intervals are part of the Pomodoro technique, which you might find helpful.) Set a timer to keep you on track as you write. While the timer is running, your job is to only write – you can’t check emails, go on Facebook, and so on. It might feel surprisingly hard at first to stay focused in this way, but you’ll soon find it becomes more natural. If you’re fighting a long-entrenched distractibility habit, you might want to use an app like Freedom.to to help you – you can block specific websites, or even the whole internet, for a period of time. What to Do While You Write #7: Keep a â€Å"Distractions† Notebook to Hand One simple tool that I find very helpful is a notebook, diary or even scrap of paper where I can jot down distractions. These are often things I need to remember to do (â€Å"Order Le Guin book† is on my list right now, because as I was drafting this post, I remembered that the science fiction book group I attend is meeting in a couple of weeks) You can use a distractions list not only for â€Å"to do† items, though, but also for impulses that crop up. Stuff like â€Å"see what’s new on xkcd† or â€Å"look up next season of Lucifer† can go on your list, too! Once you get to a break, you can delve into some of those distractions, guilt-free. #8: Don’t Stop to Look Things Up How often are you writing a blog post (or a scene of your novel, or a chapter of your book) – only to realise that you need to look up a name or a fact or a link? And how often do you stop, look it up and end up spending the next half an hour in an internet rabbit-hole? I do this more often than I’d care to admit! But as much as possible, I try to not look things up when I’m writing. Instead, I put a [note to self] in square brackets in my draft, so I can come back and insert the name/fact/link/etc later on. Here’s an example from the draft of this very post: #9: Don’t Edit While You’re Writing I know you’ve been told this one already, but it’s a piece of advice that always bears repeating: don’t edit while you’re writing. Is it okay to occasionally backspace and fix a typo, or restart a sentence that somehow came out wrong? Sure. (Though some â€Å"don’t-edit† purists might disagree with me!) However, if you draft a paragraph, change three sentences, draft another paragraph, cut everything you’ve written so far and start again you’re not going to get far. If you change your mind about something as you’re writing, just pop the section you’re unsure about into italics. Make a quick note about what you’re thinking about changing (e.g. â€Å"remove John from this scene†) and then proceed as if you’d already made that change. That way, you don’t lose momentum – and you don’t waste time editing something that you might later decide to change yet again. What to Do After You Write #10: Record How Your Writing Session Went If you’ve never tried keeping a writing journal before, give it a go. You could have a document on your computer where you jot down how you got on, you could make an entry in your diary, you could use a notebook whatever works for you. Each time you finish a writing session, take a minute or two to note what went well and what didn’t quite work out. For instance, â€Å"started well but got distracted half-way by answering an email from Jenny† or â€Å"took ages to get going but really got into the flow after a few paragraphs†. If you keep up your journal for a few weeks, you’ll find that you can spot patterns – and that you become more aware of what does (and doesn’t) work for you. He was born in Germany in 1879, but Albert did not come to America until 1933, when he feared for his life and fled from Nazi Germany. It was at this time that he was at his greatest fame.(PBS 1) He then began his work for the United States. His discoveries have impacted all facets of American culture. The sophisticated Special Theory of Relativity in physics that he created models the behavior of the entire universe. As stated on Nova, General Relativity has spawned the most important results in modern astronomy.(Levenson 4) Perhaps his largest contribution to America, Albert Einstein played a role in preserving American power. Einstein provided the biggest contribution to American science, setting most precedents for scientific study and standards. He evoked theories then thought radical and was then able to prove them and have since been followed. Albert Einstein catapulted into a revolution for U.S. defense as well as higher intellectual thought and goal-setting. After all, there have been many revolutions in the vast field of science, but that of Einstein has become the most famous. Albert Einsteins work was vastly important Sadly, his revolution has been taken for granted by this generation. Einstein was a visionary, a new mind that saw through the limitations of his day. Without Albert Einsteins research into motion and relativity theory, there would be no quantum theory or MRI for medical research. Einsteins reach extends through every fiber of American independence and ingenuity. Albert Einstein epitomizes even today the cutting edge of technology. As Genius Among Geniuses states, From 1905 to 1925, Einstein transformed humankinds understanding of nature on every scaleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Now, nearly a century after he began to make his mark, we are still exploring Einsteins universe. The problems he could not solve remain the ones that define the cutting edge, the most tantalizing and compelling.(Levenson 5) In addition, Albert Einstein was so important because of his intellectual accomplishments. He is considered by most to be an incredible genius. Einstein had a knack for inventive ideas. Imagination thrilled him more so than science. Of this matter, Albert said, When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledgeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.(Knowledgeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ 1) Einstein leapt into the vast expanses of physics and accomplished more in that short period of time than had ever been discovered before. While trying to hold down a job at the patent office, he was busy working on physics on his own. He developed his extremely famous Special Theory of Relativity(which states that measurements of time and distance vary systematically as one object moves relative to another), proving Newton wrong. In March, Einstein creates the quantum theory of light, followed by two papers in Apri l and May on atom size and motion(proving that atoms exist), and then completes Special Relativity in June.(Levenson) Amazing, but thats not all. This incredible outbreak of study is compounded by the daddy of them all. Yes, the world-renowned E=MC2, the most famous relationship in science. So many amazing discoveries, and the magnitude of any of them would be astounding for someone in any field. All of this sprang forth from the mind of Einstein in one year! It is best phrased by PBS associate Thomas Levenson: In sum-an amazing outburst: Einsteins 1905 still evokes awe. Historians call it annus mirabilis, the miracle year. Einstein ranges from the smallest scale to the largest (for special relativity is embodied in all motion throughout the universe),through fundamental problems about the nature of energy, matter, motion, time, and space-all the while putting in forty hours a week at the patent office. Well said. But, the best had yet to appear. After achieving a lifetimes work in 1905, Einstein achieved what Thomas Levenson calls a twenty year run at the cutting edge of physics. For all the miracles of his miracle year, his best work is(was) still to come. In 1907, he taught that gravity and acceleration are equivalent. He began to solve the central problems in all of physics in 1911, followed by developing his theories of relativity through the twenties, searching through quantum mechanics for some years, and then developing more theories about dimensions of the universe.(Levenson 4-5) Some of the most influential work of the century, 1915s General Theory of Relativity had taken eight years to complete and was quite a feat. This theory and the accompanying ideas that he proved come close to encompassing the vastness of Einsteins mind. Just think about how revolutionary his ideas were. Albert himself said, Physical Objects are not in space, but these objects are spacially extended. In this way the concept of empty space loses its meaning.(Relativity, vi) This theory was deep! While formulating in 1915, Einstein took his mind to the edge. He wrote a letter telling about his discovery. This month, he wrote to physicist Arnold Sommerfield, I have lived through the most exacting period of my lifeand the most fruitful. Sommerfield was not immediately impressed, a fact which induced Einstein to send him a postcard: You will become convinced of the General T heory of Relativity as soon as you have studied it. Therefore I will not utter a word in its defense.(Clark, 252) Nor was it needed. This principle, which took so long to perfect, was completed in 1915 and states that all matter and energy in the universe mold the shape of space and the flow of time. Its a little deeper than that, but Einstein explains it well in his book Relativity. Although not initially recognized as so, Albert Einstein was perhaps the most intelligent human ever. Finally, Albert Einstein was extremely influential in the research toward Americas (as well as the worlds)nuclear technology, demonstrating his ability as the most influential person of the twentieth century. The aforementioned E=MC2 proved that energy and matter are linked. At first, even Einstein did not understand what he had, but even then he suggests that the heat produced by the element radium could mark the conversion of tiny amounts into energy. (Levenson) This led to the work toward the infamous atomic bomb, making Einstein the father of the most famous weapon in history. Because of his studies and his efforts to make President Roosevelt aware of the potential crisis at hand, Albert Einstein has helped to put America in place as perhaps the greatest and most powerful nation in the world. He is credited with the development of the most powerful energy supply ever. Although mo st notable, Albert himself was not that pleased with the work on the atomic bomb. He took full responsibility for the creation of the effort toward it but absolutely despised the fact that harm could arise. Regardless, Einstein stated, The discovery of nuclear chain reactions need not bring about the destruction of mankind than did the discovery of matches. We only must do everything in our power to safeguard against its abuse.(War/A-Bomb 1) Over a short period of time, Einstein wrote four letters to president Franklin D. Roosevelt regarding the use of atomic energy. The first in this series launched the arms race. It was a warning to president Roosevelt of the possibility of the German government constructing powerful new bombs. Nevertheless, Einstein took full responsibility for its consequences, calling it the greatest mistake of his life.(Elert 1) In his letters to the president, Einstein and his associates wrote out exactly what were the best interests to pursue. Einstein did not want war, he simply thought that his only recourse was to notify the U.S. government of the possibility of producing chain reactions of nuclear energy so that they would have it before Germany did.(Elert 2) In his letters, Einstein states that it is extremely important to pursue the development of radium(element of the atomic bombs) before Germany can.(Clark 678-9) This was due to the fact that the war had already begun and Einstein was trying to ensure that the federal government had the advantage and that some order of peace, if at all possible, would be reached by the efforts of America. Albert Einstein differed from other scientists and professionals because of the incredible importance attached to the philosophical aspect of physics. Through the practical application of his teachings, the world becomes more educated on intelligence and technology. As we look behind at what he achieved and ahead to what his legacy holds for the future, we see the magnitude of this genius of a mans impact upon the twentieth century. Through his immigration and contribution to American science and society, extreme intelligence, and preservation of the United States through intuition in nuclear technology, Albert Einstein was the most influential person of the twentieth century.
